Mosaics as paintings?

I have repeat clients who have commissioned me to make mosaics for them that are very pictorial. The subject matter would often be easiest (for me) to address in a painting. Translating their vision into mosaics can be challenging: glass comes in many colors but not the same gradation of color that one can achieve with paints. The latest work for these clients is based on a view of the pier in Naples, FL, where they have spent time. My goal was to capture the vividness of the sunset and movement of the ocean.

Wildflowers and magic carpets

Genna said that she would like a stained glass window featuring lupines and California poppies. Doug mentioned mariposa lilies. It turned into this 18”h x 16.5” w window.

What do I mean by a magic carpets? I wanted to do something abstract on this wooden tray and I was inspired by, well, planty shapes, but in a sort of regular pattern and this made me think of magic carpets. I don’t know why. I’d like to have this as my magic carpet, although maybe not made out of stained glass.

Firepit cover-as-tabletop, stained glass-on-tempered glass mosaic

Clients approached me about making a glass-on-glass tabletop for their new exterior gas firepit so that when it was not lit, they could use it as a low table set amongst their garden furniture. They wanted a mosaic around the outer perimeter of the tabletop. The theme of the mosaic is loosely rendered native plants and birds. I used stained glass on a tempered glass base, with opaque stained glass over the rim and clear stained glass on the interior and exterior portions of the mosaics. The adhesive is UV-curing glue. I built the rim that sits underneath the mosaic and on top of the fireplace rim from stacked and thinsetted wedi board.
